Many people suffer from great anxiety when they have to visit a dentist as they are terrified of the intense pain they need to undergo. But gone are those days when a dentist would operate in your mouth while you screamed in excruciating pain.
The first sedation in the field of dentistry was introduced in the 1840s when the nitrous oxide was administered to the patient. From then sedation has found a consistent use in this field. There are various types of dental sedation available.
The extent of the dental procedure to be performed as well as the time period it will consume, determines the type of sedation. Sometimes, the physical condition of the patient also determines the sedation type.
Different Types Of Dental Sedation
This is also called as the nitrous oxide sedation as it is used from the ancient times. In the USA it is believed that for every 3 dentists, one makes use of this gas to relax his/her patient.
During this procedure, a mixture of gases such as oxygen and nitrous oxide id passed on to the patient’s nasal cavity using a nasal mask. This makes the patient undergo a euphoric effect and helps to relax. The recovery is very fast and the patient can perform routine activities almost immediately.
Oral Conscious Sedation
This is also a renowned method of dental relaxation as it can be administered to the patients very easily. Also a pill of sedation is given to the patient the previous night before the appointment time. So while time for appointment nears, the patient is relaxed and calm. Recovering from this type of sedation takes a few hours and hence the patient should take a support of another person to reach home from the dentist.
This is a low cost sedation and is suitable for those dental procedures which might take a few hours. Also there is a drawback for this type of sedation which is the exact amount of requirement for sedation cannot be derived and the recovery period is not fixed on all as the results vary from one person to another.
Intravenous Conscious Sedation Or IV Sedation
This sedation type is considered to be very popular one among the rest as it helps to curb the anxiety level completely. Also these drugs are analgesic in nature and are administered through the veins to make it blend with the blood stream. This offers partial amnesia, pain relief and deep relaxation.
Also the dentist will be able to control the flow of the drug of sedation through the vein. He will also monitor the pulse rate, heart rate and blood pressure to ensure that the patient’s condition is stable. This sedation type is the most expensive one with nature as it involves the cost of equipment and the staff who are responsible for monitoring the activity.
Intramuscular Conscious Sedation
Intramuscular conscious sedation is not commonly used in dental procedure but is administered on small kids who have dental problems. The muscle in your upper arm or the thigh is injected with the sedative. The sedation will occur in about half an hour.
