The Use Of PFM Crowns And Bridges
Crowns and bridges are mostly used in the dental offices on regular basis. Crowns plays most important role when the tooth has under grown a root canal, there is severe tooth decay or when the tooth is broken.
Crowns are also made when you undergo an implant and a screw is placed in the bone where there is missing tooth. Whereas the bridges are used in replacing a missing tooth, or teeth, where the crowns are fixed on both the sides of the tooth in order to fill the gap and fix an artificial tooth in the empty space.
Both the PFM crowns and bridges are restorations which are permanent. They are only removed if there is any repair or to re-make the tooth. The step involved in the preparation of gold crown is a little different. The tooth structure is lessened to get more layers of metal and the thickness of the porcelain is increased.
Making Of PFM Crowns Or Bridges
The impressions of the tooth are taken and the tooth is prepared by the dentist. The temporary crown or bridge plays its role here; its fabrication protects the prep, until the original crown is ready at the dental laboratory. Cementation is done later once the crown is prepared.
The crown is prepared by casting a metal coping for the bridge or crown, once the coping is made of the correct thickness it serves as the base of the PFM, porcelain is then applied on top of the coping and kept at very high temperatures in a kiln-like machine. Now the porcelain is fused to the metal and carves are made to it in order to make it look natural. Now the dentist plants it in the patient’s mouth.
Advantages Of PFM
One of the most important plus point about PFM is, it is looks natural and makes it hard for the observer to differentiate a real and a fake one. It is very flexible and fits into the mouth easily because of its thick layer of glaze. The best part is the color is not lost loose, but proper dental maintenances are required for it to last for years.
Disadvantages Of PFM
The main drawback of PFM is it is not translucent, i.e. natural teeth are not opaque and they help in the easy movement of any fluids. But a PFM is opaque and light and it is difficult to pass through the metal. The patient feels it a little heavier in the due to the presence of the metal.
However, natural you may tell to prepare but the shiny metal is shown whenever the patient open his mouth wide. Moreover, proclaim is rough and any breakage may cause harm to the patients tongue and it gives an irritating feeling.
