At this juncture, it’s essentially important to take good care of your oral health because pregnancy brings in hormonal changes which in turn increase the risk of developing gum disease.
Care With Respect To Your Baby
First thing you need to do while on dental checkup is tell the doctor that you are pregnant. This would help him plan for the treatment cautiously. Although it’s best to get through any major dental treatments before the onset of pregnancy.
Routine Dental Care
One can take up for routine dental check ups during the second trimester. As the first trimester and second half of the third trimester are critical times in the baby’s growth and development, it’s wiser to avoid exposure to procedures that could in any way harm or hinder the baby’s growth and development.
Let your dentist know the names and dosages of medicines you are taking. Your dentist might need to change your dental treatment plan based on this information.
Try to avoid dental X-rays during pregnancy, if essential, your dentist will use a shield to safeguard you and your baby.
Eat A Healthy & Balanced Diet
Before we know, our baby’s first teeth begin to develop with the onset of second trimester of pregnancy. Dairy products, cheese, and curd are good sources of essential minerals that are good for your baby’s developing teeth, gums, and bones.
Care With Respect To Your Oral Health
Just because you are pregnant does not mean you will skip your dental checkup. More than any other time, regular checkups are very important. As stated above also, pregnancy causes hormonal changes that put you at increased risk of dental diseases like tender gums that bleed easily, a problem called pregnancy gingivitis.
Go for more frequent professional cleanings during your second trimester or early third trimester to remove irritants, control plaque, and maintain optimum oral health.
Observe any changes in your gums. If softness, bleeding, or swelling occurs at any time during your pregnancy, consult your dentist as soon as possible. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
Use a good-quality, soft-bristled toothbrush. Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, and brush softly for two to three minutes to remove the plaque that forms on your teeth.
If morning sickness keeps you from brushing your teeth, try changing the flavor of toothpaste during your pregnancy. Ask your dentist to recommend brands. Rinse with a mouth wash if you suffer from morning sickness.
Do Not Overdo Sweets
Cravings for sweet are common during pregnancy. It’s not a no – no to snacks but keep in mind that the more frequently you snack, greater are the chances of developing dental problems. Gargle after every meal and snack. Limit foods that contain sugar to mealtimes only.
– Avoid carbonated beverages, coffee & tea. Drink water or low-fat milk.
– Choose fruit rather than fruit juice, which will be good for teeth, daily intake of fruit and provide fiber too.
– Eat small amounts of nutritious foods throughout the day, if possible.
– Chew sugarless gum after meals.
– Have a good time ahead and have your 32-teeth smile with your baby!!!
