Orthodontics is a stream of dental care that mainly deals with orthodontic braces or dental braces. These devices are used to straighten and bring proper alignment to the teeth and restore them into correct position. To get a healthy and well shaped dental structure, orthodontic braces have become the supreme option these days.
They even help in bite correction, like the correction of over-bite, under-bite, malocclusions, open bites deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth and other issues of the teeth and jaw. There is a variety of orthodontic options adopted by dentists for the purpose of realigning jaws and teeth. The doctor first performs a thorough examination of the jaws and teeth and then goes on further to choose from the orthodontic options. The available orthodontic options for correcting misaligned jaws and teeth are discussed here:
Various Orthodontic Options For Misaligned Jaws
Silver Or Clear Braces
Traditional silver braces have brackets with an arch-wire and thus when these braces are used, the arch-wire moves to correct the alignment of the teeth. The conventional bracket is made of stainless steel and these can either be coloured or plain.
Other than the traditional metal brace, there are also clear or tooth coloured brackets made of porcelain, which is often used for teeth and jaw correction. Based on your dental condition, the doctor decides the most appropriate brace for you.
Orthodontic problems do not concern only the alignment of teeth and jaws, but it also deals with widening of narrow jaws, removing crowded teeth and much more. Other than braces, orthodontic treatment also offers devices known as expansion applications.
These orthodontic applications are used to make space to remove crowded teeth, broaden the narrow part of the jaw, correcting overbite, under bite, cross bites, open and deep bites and also these applications can be used in patients who are at a growing stage where there is a possibility of changes taking place in the bones. Some of the expansion appliances include, three way expander, bonded rapid palatal expander, pendulum, and fan type banded and fixed rapid expander, W arch, Quad Helix, T Rex and many more.
Lingual Or Invisible Braces
These braces also come with metal brackets but these are known as invisible braces because the brackets are positioned on the inside surface of the teeth and thus is invisible from outside.
These braces can be custom made for each patient based on their severity of misalignment of teeth and jaws.
These are another one of orthodontic options used to correct the misalignment of the jaws and teeth. These are different from traditional metal braces because the Invisalign is made of plastic. Invisalign is made of a number of clear plastic plates and these plates move to correct the alignment of the teeth and jaw.
Unlike the traditional metal braces, the Invisalign can be removed anytime and thus these are easier to clean. Being made of plastic, these braces are transparent and they camouflage with the teeth and thus are invisible to the person in front of you. These braces are prescribed only after a digital scanning for accurate fit.
These are orthodontic devices that are used to correct minor orthodontic problems and also for preventing orthodontic problems that might crop up in future. These are primarily used in children who have deciduous teeth.
