Orthodontic braces or dental braces are devices used in orthodontics to straighten and align teeth to bring them into correct position. Orthodontic braces are used to improve dental health and also for bite correction, like the correction of under-bite, over-bite, cross bites, open bites deep bites, malocclusions, crooked teeth and many other types of problems of the teeth and jaw.
However, if you are wearing orthodontic braces then it is essential that certain types of foods are avoided. Orthodontic braces and foods to avoid is a major concern if you have dental braces because there are particular types of food, if consumed while wearing braces might increase the risk of developing cavities or white marks on your teeth. The types of foods that you should avoid if you have dental braces are discussed here:
Foods To Avoid Orthodontic Braces
When it comes to orthodontic braces and foods to avoid, ice is the first and the foremost food that should be avoided. If you have orthodontic braces, then ice is the worst enemy of the braces.
This is because ice is too hard for the braces and even a single unmindful bite on the ice will immediately break the braces you are wearing.
Foods like nuts, lolly pops, bread that is crusty, popcorn, corn chips, and hard biscuits like oatmeal biscuits, hard cookies should not be consumed if you have orthodontic braces. This is because, these foods are hard and so requires stronger bites to break them up and chew them. So if you consume these foods, there is a risk of damaging the orthodontic braces and this in turn increases your treatment time.
Sugary And Starchy Food
Foods like chewing gums, bubble gums, caramel bars, sticky lollies like Skittles, Mentos, Mars Bars, Snickers, Licorice sticks, ice cream, candy, soft drinks and jelly beans should not be consumed if you have orthodontic braces because these foods are sugary and full of starch. Sugar and starch are the breeding ground for bacteria.
Bacteria build up might lead to accumulation plaque on your teeth not only jeopardising the treatment but it can also move inside under the braces and eat off the calcium from your tooth’s surface. This creates permanent white bruises on your teeth.
Moreover these foods are also chewy and sticky and these might stick to the braces you are wearing. So, other than plaque build up, there is also a risk of your braces getting tampered by the sticky and chewy foods.
For teeth with orthodontic braces, hard meat like beef is a strict no. Beef is a stringy meet and it is very fibrous and thus needs more chewing unlike lean meats. Thus consuming beef is harmful for the braces because your teeth has to put more pressure to bite and chew this meat and thus beef might damage your braces, prolonging your treatment period.
Raw Carrots And Apples
For your dental health, orthodontic braces and foods to avoid is an important issue. Foods like raw carrot and apple should not be consumed if you are wearing orthodontic braces.
Raw carrots and apples are too hard for your teeth if you are wearing braces and these might knock the braces off and bend the wires. More importantly, you might not realise it until the next day because the braces do not fall off, rather every loose brace extends your treatment time by at least two months.
