Food containing carbohydrates like cakes, candies, breads, milk, cereals and soda which are left over on the teeth causes tooth decay. These foods are digested and converted into acids by the bacteria that reside in the mouth.



The combination of food debris, acid, bacteria and saliva develops into plaque and gets attached to the teeth. These acids dissolve the enamel of the teeth causing holes in the teeth called as cavities or caries.

Tooth decay affects both the outer coating of tooth (enamel) and inner layer of tooth (dentin).Lets see some of the simple mechanisms to prevent tooth decay.

Choose A Right Tooth Brush And Tooth Paste

Invariably, all of us brush our teeth. But not all are getting dental problems. Choosing a proper tooth brush and tooth paste matters a lot. Choose a tooth brush with small and round bristles that can reach all areas of your mouth especially the tiny cervices in the mouth.

Avoid up-down and left-right movements for brushing your teeth. Hold the toothbrush so that the bristles are at 45 degree to the surface of teeth. Brush your teeth in tiny circular motion and repeat it until all the teeth are covered.





Do not forget to brush the back of the teeth, since this is the dwelling place for the plaque. Apply plaque and cavity fighting toothpaste on the tooth brush. Avoid tooth paste with artificial sweeteners and additives.

Instead of these commercial tooth pastes go for herbal toothpastes containing neem, cloves and turmeric which contains anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties.

Wrap a long dental floss so that one end is around right hand forefinger and the other end is around left hand forefinger. Ensure that the dental floss is of 2 inch between both your hands. Now pull the floss in between the teeth so that it rubs all spots in areas hidden between the teeth.

Repeat the same procedure until the entire mouth is flossed. Thoroughly rinse your mouth with water. This is one of the proven methods to remove dental plague and to prevent tooth decay.

You can use wooden plague removers to remove hard deposition of plague. Wooden removers are effective in removing stubborn plague without damaging the enamel.

Rub the pointed edge of the wooden plague remover on the gum line between your teeth. Rub it back and forth on the enamel. Continue in the same manner until the entire mouth is covered.

This is a dental practice that is followed from ancient days. Vegetable oil like sesame or sunflower oil is used. Put one table spoon of oil in your mouth and swish it like a mouth wash.

This should be done as a first thing in the morning in empty stomach. If you are new to this practice you can start with 2-3 minutes initially and extend till 15-20 minutes later. Unlike your tooth brush, even the tiny crevice in your mouth will not be left uncovered.

This therapy can remove the streptococcus mutans which is one of the harmful bacteria found in the saliva. This is a simple, cost effective home therapy for maintaining oral hygiene.

Therapeutic mouth washes are recommended by dentists to remove plague, cavities and gingivitis. It contains fluoride that kills the toxic bacteria.

Unlike therapeutic mouth rinses, cosmetic mouth rinses gives pleasant smell but removes plague and bad breadth only to a smaller extend. Avoid mouth wash which are alcohol based and contains strong detergents.
