Taking care of your teeth is undoubtedly the most important part of self care. Everyone should agree that teeth are so important that it can make or break your overall appearance.
So that justifies the need for dental care. And what are the ways to take care of these important parts of your body? Do not be afraid, as these are not very difficult to follow.
How To Care For Your Teeth
There is no alternative to this very basic practice. Regular brushing should be made into a habit. Normally a person should brush 3 times a day – in the morning after getting out of bed; after a major meal (better to brush after every meal) and before going to bed.
Just make sure that the bristles are not hard as they can damage the enamel or even remove it completely over time. As of the toothpaste, you can use any toothpaste with just the right fluoride content.
This is as important as regular brushing. Brushing may clean the surface of the teeth, but fine food particles and fibers tend to get stuck between teeth. Flossing helps to clean these up. There is no particular type of floss that you need to use. Any of the regular floss will do.
Tobacco probably has no good effect. Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco to stay away from lots of harmful effects including its bad effect on teeth. It spoils your teeth and damages the oral tissues too.
Apart from that, regular smoking or chewing tobacco can cause ugly stains on the teeth which not only look bad but, in the later stages can cause permanent discoloration.
Like tobacco, alcohol can also be harmful. Though it is not as harmful as tobacco, it can cause various complications if your teeth or gum is already suffering from some kind of problem like irritation of gums and oral tissues, tooth decay or if you are recuperating from dental diseases.
Regulation of Certain Foods
Avoid snacks that stick to the teeth and gum. These can include candies, cakes and pie, crackers, biscuits and chips, raisins, etc. The sticky remains attract micro organisms which in turn cause and aggravate tooth decay.
It is more important because people hardly brush their teeth after having these snacks. If you cannot avoid snacking then chew on the tooth cleaning gums. But these should not be the sugary regular chewing gums but the ones that are specifically developed for tooth cleaning.
Avoid Aerated Drinks
Avoid the aerated drinks like cola and soda. The citric acid and phosphoric acid present in these drinks are corrosive in nature. They can slowly dissolve the enamel of the teeth as well as cause tooth decay. Also make sure that you keep children away from these as much as you can.
Regular Dental Check-ups
This is the ultimate step in maintaining a good dental health. An oral check-up every six months is generally recommended. But even if that is not possible, an annual dental check-up is a must. This will help the dentist to tell you about the condition of the teeth and if there is any sign of decay or irregularity then it can be nipped in the bud.
