Teeth sensitivity is a discomfort or pain in the teeth that may extend till the nerve endings of the teeth. Sensitivity gets worse when you take cold ice cream or hot coffee. Sweet candies and sour lemon also produces the same effect.
The inner layer of the tooth is dentine and it is shielded by enamel. Dentine has tubules which connects it to inside of tooth nerves. When dentine is exposed, nerves get easily stimulated. This results in teeth sensitivity and pain.
Steps To Take Care Of Sensitive Teeth
Avoid Forceful Brushing
Brush with a toothpaste containing soft round bristles. Hard bristles scratch the enamel and make it sensitive. Use your fingers instead of toothpaste, if you have super sensitive teeth.
Do not brush your teeth forcefully and for a long time. This results in bleeding of gums which irritates the nerves. Aggressive way of brushing exposes your tooth roots and makes it more sensitive.
Applying gentle pressure on the tooth brush is only required for cleaning your teeth. If you are not able to adapt for a less strenuous method of cleaning, then electronic toothbrush would be a good option for you. Electronic toothbrush is capable of controlling the spinning speed of bristles.
Take at least two minutes for brushing. It requires some time for the chemicals in the toothpaste to interact with your teeth. Luke warm water is preferable for brushing your teeth. Using cold water or hot water leads to sensitivity.
Use Desensitizing Toothpaste
Does your toothpaste contain fluoride? If not, start brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Fluorides make your tooth enamel stronger and reduce the chances of getting tooth sensitivity.
There are toothpastes containing strontium chloride or potassium nitrate, formulated specially for sensitive teeth. They travel deep till the teeth nerves and build a protective shield.
Strontium chloride helps in hardening the tubules by interacting with the saliva. If you could not find right toothpaste get help from your dentist.
Avoid Food Causing Sensitivity
When you start feeling sensitivity in the teeth, avoid food items that cause sensitivity. Food containing starch and sugar causes the secretion of digestive acids in the mouth.
Citrus fruits containing more acid content bring acid directly to your teeth. Avoid taking orange, lemon and tomatoes. Use a straw while drinking these fruit juices, to reduce the time it spends on the teeth.
These items corrode the enamel which is the protective covering of the teeth. Other contributors for sensitive teeth are beverage like coffee and tea.
If you cannot completely stop them, bring down the number of cups you drink per day. The more hot and concentrated you drink these beverages, the more acidic they are.
Consult Your Dentist
Many people tend to ignore when sensitivity goes off in a couple of days. Inform your dentist about your sensitivity in the early stage itself. He may recommend proper abrasion toothpaste and desensitizing toothpaste. After diagnosing, he may suggest fluoride rinse, fluoride gel or high fluoride toothpaste.
Your dentist may paint plastic resins or fluoride varnish on your teeth. When your gum lines are receded, sealing the roots with bonding agents would solve the problem.
If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, ask him for a mouth guard to wear on teeth during night. When sensitivity develops on the tooth with silver filling, you may approach him for redoing the silver filling. Going for a dental check up biannually is a must.
