Brushing of gums is extremely important as it helps in getting rid of plague build up, prevention of bacterial tooth decay and formation of cavities. Gum brushing helps in improving blood circulation to the gums and through gums, ultimately to the teeth, keeping both of these healthy.
Healthy gums are the key for a set of healthy teeth and hence, brushing of gums is an essential component of oral health. The proper and correct way of gum brushing involves a gentle brush massage. Gums must be massaged with soft bristled toothbrush, with or without toothpaste application.
Toothbrush bristles must be moved in a circular motion, pointing at 45 degree towards the gum line for the top teeth and downwards the gum line, for the bottom teeth.
Avoid brushing the gums vigorously as it may lead to receding gums and increased tooth sensitivity. Toothbrush with soft bristles only needs to be used to avoid the wear and tear of the gums. Torn gums will lead to gum problems and subsequently the other oral issues.
Avoid Excess Gum Brushing
Brushing of teeth and gums need to be performed, for just two minutes. Teeth should be cleaned little vigorously but with gums, one need to be gentle and careful. Those who do excess brushing in misconception of better teeth and gums, tend to cause more damage to their gums.
People with strong gums may not need an extra care for their gums, but those with weak gums that show repetitive gum problems, must be extra careful while performing brushing gums.
Gum cleaning is equally important or more essential, depending upon the oral health of an individual. Additionally, tongue cleaning with soft bristles of the toothbrush should also be done to clear off bacteria that may be the cause for bad breath.
Maintaining Baby Gums
Even before the eruption of first tooth in babies, it is recommended to get into a regular routine of wiping baby’s gums with a soft and cleaned cloth. Wrap a clean cloth around the index finger and massage the gums gently. One does not need to use any toothpaste for oral health in babies at all.
Though, bacteria within mouth may not harm the gums, before emergence of teeth, but since, eruption of teeth cannot be depicted, it is better to start beforehand and avoid any gum or teeth problems in babies. Moreover, the routine gum cleaning makes it easier for the initiation of tooth brushing in the babies, later on.
